Toronto Fringe review: Pretending Things Are A Cock

By Nick May

Pretending Things Are A Cock

I didn’t know what to expect walking into this show. After reading a brief description, I was convinced that I was walking into a pseudo Puppetry of the Penis using foreign objects. What I got was completely different; Comedian Jon Bennett narrates a photographic exhibition that details his journey around the world. Along the way he showcases famous landmarks, random objects and even people as his cock!

Jon is instantly likeable from the very moment he engages the audience and commands the stage. What’s more impressive than the phallic innuendos are the witty stories that accompany each photo. This show offers storytelling stand up comedy with a twist. Imagine David Sedaris, but Australian, straight and a little less cynical.

If you’re having a bad day, see this show! Jon’s witty way with words will lift your spirits. I could listen to him tell stories for hours; I was on the edge of my seat the entire time waiting to hear more. If you’re having a great day, still see this show! It will encourage you the grab life by the cock and travel the world wishing you spent a day in Jon’s thongs - not the underwear type, we know them as flip flops or sandals.

A live comedian has never quite tickled me this way and I’ll never look at a baby calf the same way again.
